As part of the early contractor involvement and pre-qualification procedures, Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors B.V. (Van Oord) is performing Front End Engineering Design (FEED) activities for the major elements of the Tortue project with the goal to support definitions of the concept. The project comprises a subsea production system tied back to a pre-treatment Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, which subsequently transfers gas to a near-shore hub for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production and export. Van Oord has requested CDR International B.V. to perform a MetOcean study and derive the wave boundary conditions for design.

CDR has performed a wave assessment for the following items:

  • Analyses of operational and extreme offshore wind and wave data;
  • Nearshore wave transformation study, to derive the operational wave conditions at the location of the breakwater. The study will take the propagation of multiple swell components and the generation of wind-waves from offshore to the project site in account;
  • Analyses of extreme wave conditions at the project site for extreme event return periods of 1:1, 1:10, 1:50, 1:100, 1:200 and 1:1000 yr at various locations around the breakwater.
