A new container terminal is being constructed for APM Terminals near Puerto Moin in Costa Rica. The reclamation for the 36ha container yard has been constructed as an ‘island’. The present construction is of Phase 2A, and commenced in early 2015. The current works consist of construction of a 600m wharf structure, construction of approx. 2200m long breakwater to protect the 36ha reclamation, and dredging of access channel, turning circle, and tug berths. The North Breakwater to the Moin Container Terminal ‘island’ forms approximately three sides of a rectangle, and acts as a reclamation seawall over virtually all of those three sides. In March 2017 the Contractor reported rapid subsidence of the apron stone behind the northern breakwater at the north-east corner, and similar settlement was noted at two other separate locations.
CDR has undertaken a field visit and presented a detailed report, containing the Scope of Services that were divided in 5 stages and included the Breakwater (BW) design review of the “North Breakwater” as follows:
- BW design using original parameters (input data);
- BW design using updated parameters (waves, chart datum, etc.), including interpretation of raw data;
- Analyse the current BW design (using original input data);
- Analyse the current BW design (using new input data);
- Repair of the existing BW.
