On Friday May 3rd, the symposium of the Waterbouwdispuut took place, with the main theme: “Currents of Change, Adapting Hydraulic Engineering to Climate Threats”. Representing CDR were Dirk, Bart-Jan, and Stijn.
In view of the theme of the symposium, our colleague, Bart-Jan van der Spek gave a talk on a project from last year: “Baseline Studies and Design for Strategic Coastal Protection and Flood Mitigation for Long Island”. The project is part of the ICZM Bahamas Program that was initiated by The Government of the Bahamas and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with the aim of building resilience to coastal risks including those associated with climate change. Long Island was hit by hurricane Joaquin in October 2015 resulting in severe damage and flooding. CDR carried out baseline studies, assessed the flood risk and developed strategic coastal protection design to mitigate flooding for central Long Island. For more information, visit the CDR International website.
After the plenary session with lots of interesting talks, it was time for the company market and accompanying drinks! We connected with many students and shared our experiences in the wonderful field of hydraulic engineering. After a few drinks, we were the last ones to wrap up our stand and say goodbye!
Thanks to the Waterbouwdispuut for hosting us, we genuinely enjoyed being there and connecting with the community!
