The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is planning to extend the runway of Cox’s Bazar Airport up to a length of 12,000ft. The extension requires the construction of a land reclamation protruding with associated coastal protection works into Moheskhali Channel. For this, the CAAB has requested the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) to (i) carry out a hydrological and morphological modelling study, (ii) to prepare a coastal protection / embankment design and cost estimation, and (iii) to prepare the civil works for the approach navigation lighting under the contract of the Additional Hydrological and Morphological Study for the Further extension of Cox’s Bazar Airport. IWM has requested CDR International to carry out the coastal protection / embankment design.
The scope of the study conducted by CDR encompassed the following:

  1. Assessment of design conditions for coastal protection works based on the numerical hydraulic modelling works carried out by IWM
  2. Design of the protective measures (coastal protection / embankment)
  3. Preparation of design report
  4. Supporting IWM with detailing of the design work
