The main objective of the feasibility study is to investigate the feasibility of a template approach for the design, implementation and maintenance of projects leading to sustainable water provision as well as to longer term socio-economic benefits in arid and semi-arid land in Kenya by means of integrated contour trenching.
More specifically it is to examine and assess the feasibility of integrated CT as a water management system in local environmental conditions, consisting of:

  • Technical feasibility of large-scale integrated CT to restore soil humidity, capture and transport rainfall over specific distances to aquifers and soil conditions necessary for crop cultivation
  • economic feasibility: based on the technical requirements and necessary effort, the related investment and periodic O&M expenditures in the integrated CT will be estimated and related to the business case (fodder farm and dairy farm), in order to assess the economic feasibility of the proposed integrated CT approach
  • Develop a template approach that can be applied in any environmental conditions

CDR and partners have carried out the study which consisted of work packages under which related task have been executed:

  • Work Package 1: Analyses of the environmental conditions
  • Work Package 2: Assessment of hydrogeological conditions
  • Work Package 3: Conceptual design, business case validation and overall feasibility
